During my 404 Summer Semester I took a
minor in Learning Disabilities. There was a focus on reading disabilities and the different ways to plan a unit for struggling learners. One of my classes involved tutoring of a grade 5 student from Burnaby. During that time I tracked her progress with reading and documented which strategies worked and which didn't when it came to improving her reading. The main factor in her lack of
reading comprehension was that she was an
EAL learner. During the summer I created a year plan to support reading comprehension for intermediate - middle school learners. This was valuable because I was able to implement some of the ideas into my long practicum later in the Fall. However, the most valuable course was one on
how to teach math. From this class I gained multiple activities, games, and strategies that I could bring back to the classroom.
