BE AWESOME! This is the theme for the students and staff at Maillard this year. The focus is on always trying to make ourselves and our school more "awesome". This idea was woven into the staff meetings and staff were regularly praised for having "awesome" ideas. It was a really fun way to create community and have the mindset that we were always striving to get better.
The school's team was called Maillard Magic and so everything we did was termed as magical and awesome. I felt "awesome" trying to integrate myself into this upbeat community.
The entire school is also split up into smaller teams. This was great because it allowed teachers on the same team to collaborate and work together. For example, I taught Mme. Samiei's class P.E. so that she could teach my class French. I taught Ms. Hotell and Ms. Clement's grade sixes math so that they could teach my grade sevens. We also brought our classes together for P.E. on Fridays. It was a fun way for students to work with other kids and the larger group let us play differerent games in the gym. Also, this collaboration allowed lessons to run more smoothly when all teachers were generally following the same basic plan.
