My Short Practicum... Social Studies...

For our short practicum we were required to create and teach one unit plan. My SA thought it would be appropriate for me to teach Social Studies because the Kindergarten curriculum has a lot to do with community and social justice issues. Perfect for the philosophy of my LifeWorks Module! The first focus of the unit was on school community. We learned about the jobs of people in our school. I had the students create foldable school houses and draw each member of our school community on a panel. Every time we learned about a member of the school we had that person come in and do a talk with the students about what their job was. We had the principal, custodian, and secretary all take time out of their days to visit our class!

As a part of the socials unit I also introduced mapping to the class. I brought in a giant map of the lower mainland so that each student could place a pin in the spot where they were born! We ended the unit by using a map of the school to take a tour and find ourselves at different stops!
