What's in your TOC bag???

When I first started TOC'ing I was really nervous. I had no clue what to expect... would there be teachers who would leave me nothing...would I have to make up lesson plans? So I bought a giant red bag from staples and filled it with cool stuff to help me teach.

Now that I have realized that there is almost always a full day's lesson plan, I have a smaller bag and a lot less. Here's what I take to work with me every day:

- Lunch and water bottle
- stickers
- a pad of lined paper/ templates for telling the teacher how the day went
- a box of pencils, pencil crayons and felts (that I never expect to get back if I lend out)
- pens and pencils that I don't lend out
- business cards
- sometimes runners
- an Ipad

The Ipad is the best part of my ttoc kit. It was the only thing I asked for at Christmas because I knew I would use it as a teacher on call. It is SO GREAT! I have used it for tons of different things like googling terms/pictures/ideas, showing students YouTube clips, showing students pictures, listening to music with the class, letting kids play games on it as a reward, checking my emails during lunch/emailing teachers in the school, keeping notes about things....etc. It's amazing.

The only regret I have with moving to a smaller bag is that I can't really fit books into it anymore. However, if I know I am going to certain classes I will take books with me and just carry them.

Catch-up!

It is almost June and I can't believe how fast the time has flown! I really meant to keep up with this blog but admittedly I got lazy. As with my last post, I still dislike being on-call, however I feel like I am getting better at it and I'm learning some new tricks. Here are some differences from January:

- I no longer carry around a giant TTOC bag. Now it is a smaller black bag (that I still wish was bigger) so that I don't look like a weirdo with a huge bag every time I come to a new school.

- I am almost always called for middle school and I am almost always called to the same two schools. There are two schools that love me and keep requesting me. This is AWESOME because I love them too! I feel like I know almost all the students in the school (at one of the two) and so every time I show up I feel a lot of love from staff and students. I wish I could work full time at one of those schools!

- Lay-offs were announced last week and made worse today. Anybody under 6 years 3 months will be laid off! Good thing I just started and I was fully expecting to be laid off anyway.

- I am now considering what kind of job I should work in the summer (I don't qualify for EI yet).
